Season 84. 2000/2001

On 21 October ballet «Bayaderka» by Minkus. Libretto and choreography by M.Petipa and S.Khudekov. Conductor: A.Anikhanov. Set and costume designer: V.Okunev.

On 9 November "Requem" by Verdi, scenic version of theatre for the soloists, chorus and orchestra.

Since December 3, 2000 began tour tour of an orchestra under the control of the Honoureded actor of Russia A.Anikhanov on Japan. 10 symphonic concerts (Russian and foreign classical music) including of soloists of theatre. Since December 13 the ballet company has joined collective of an orchestra. The performances were prolonged till February 17, was shown about 50 performances.

From April 8 till April 25, 2001 performances of opera company in Hilebronn, Germany.

April 15, 2001 is placed site of theatre in Internet.


Season 83. 1999/2000

On 20 October choreographic tragedy «Faust». Music Sh. Kallosh. Libretto and choreography by N. Boyarchikov, V.Ivchenko and Y.Vasilkov on motives of an of the same name product Hete. Conductor: A. Anikhanov.

On 30 December opera "Zolushka" by Asafiev. Libretto  by O.Mukhortova on motives of the film-script E.Shwarc and of the same name fairy tale J. Perro. Director: O.Mukhortova. Conductor: A.Sitnikov. Set and costume designer: V.Okunev.

On 30 June opera "Otello" by Verdi. Director: S.Gaudassinsky.  Conductor: A.Anikhanov. Set and costume designer: V.Okunev.

From August 31 till September 14, 1999 performances of ballet company in Spain.
From September 23 till September 28, 1999 performances of ballet company in Italy.
From December 3, 1999 till January 30, 2000 performances of ballet company on Japan. The orchestra has given 10 symphonic concerts.

On 30 june opera Verdi «Rigoleto». Director: S.Gaudassinsky.  Conductor: A.Anikhanov. Set and costume designer: V.Okunev.

Since November 12, 1998 performances of an orchestra in Japan. With December 1 to a nim the opera company has joined. Cities: Nagoya, Osaka, Macuyma, Sapporo, Fukuoka.

From December 18, 1998 till February 1, 1999 ballet company in Japan.

From March 28 till April 14, 1999 performances of opera company in Germany, Hilebronn.


Season 81. 1997/98

The premiere of the opera "Carmen" by Bizet, dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the Theatre: on 6 March 1998. Director: S. Gaudassinsky. Conductor: A.Anikhanov. Set and costume designer: V. Okunev.

From December 10, 1997 till February 6., 1998 performances of ballet company in Japan.

From April 9 till April 26 1998 performances of opera company in Germaniums.

From July 12 till July 20, 1998 performances of an orchestra of theatre under management A.Anikhanov in Sweden - 8 concerts of popular music.

Season 80. 1996/97

The premiere of the opera "Tartuffe" by Kirke Mechem (USA) was held on 30 October 1996. Direction by A. Bashlovkin. Conductor: E. Perunov. Set and costume designer: V. Okunev.

On 21 November 1996 the premiere of the ballet "Don Quixote" by Minkus took place. Direction by A. Gorsky with N. Anissimova's, I. Belsky's, F. Lopukhov's, R. Gerbek's choreography. Conductor: A. Anikhanov Set and costume designer: V. Okunev.

The ballet company realized this sesaon two months' tour in Japan.

The opera company toured in The Netherlands (February) and Germany (April). The exibition in honour of sixtieth anniversary of S. Gaudassinsky's birth and thirtieth anniversary of his creative activities was open on 21 March 1997 at the St. Petersburg Theatre Museum. The anniversary soiree took place on 28 March at the theatre.

S.Gaudassinsky has been appointed Artistic and General Director of the Theatre. S. Gaudassinsky was awarded the Order of Services to Fatherland, 4th degree.

The premiere of the opera "Don Giovanni" by Mozart took place on 25 June 1997. Direction by K. Wagner (Germany). Conductor: A. Anikhanov. Set and costumes designer: V. Okunev.

On 31 July the ballet soiree dedicated to 20th anniversary of N. Boyarchikov's pedagogical activities took place.

Season 79. 1995/96

The tour of the opera company in Germany was realized in September 1995.

On 11 November 1995 the premiere of the ballet "The Sleeping Beauty" by Tchaikovsky took place. Choreography by M. Petipa with F. Lopukhov's, K. Sergeev's, P. Gussev's redactions. Artistic direction by N. Boyarchikov. Conductor: A. Anikhanov Designers: V. Okunev, I. Press.

In January the opera company toured in Japan. The ballet company realized the tour in Japan and also in Spain this season. The premiere of the operetta "Die Fledermaus" by J. Strauss was performed on 28 April 1996. Direction by S. Gaudassinskv. Conductor: A. Anikhanov. Set and costume designer: V. Okunev.

On 29 June 1996 the premiere of the ballet "The Nutcracker" by Tchaikovsky took place. Choreography and direction by N. Boyarchikov. Conductor: A. Anikhanov. Set and costume designer: V. Okunev.

Season 78. 1994/95

The ballet company toured in Japan. The orchestra headed by chief conductor A. Anikhanov offered also symphony concerts within this tour. The premiere of the opera "La Traviata" by Verdi was performed on 24 February 1995. Direction by S. Gaudassinsky. Musical directior and conductor: A. Anikhanov. Set and costume designer: V. Okunev. The ballet company, as the first one in Russia, realized the production of the ballet "Les Noces" by I. Stravinsky in B. Nizhinska's choreography. Artistic direction by H. Sayette (USA). Chorus conductor: N. Kornev.

J.Jilkerson (USA) renewed N. Gontcharova's set and costume design.

The premiere took place on 10 June 1995. The opera and ballet soloists performed in Orenburg due to memorable dates of the theatre's evacuation in 1941-1944.

Season 77. 1993/94

The ballet company toured in Norway, Spain and Japan this season.

The premiere of the ballet "Le Corsaire" performed on 4 December 1993 was dedicated to the teacher and ballet master P. Gussev. Choreography by M. Petipa. Direction by P. Gussev. Conductor: Iu. Nikonenko. Artistic direction by N. Boyarchikov. Set and costume designer: S. Virsaladze. The opera company toured in Portugal in October 1993.

On 23 June 1994 the premiere of the opera "The Tale of the Tsar Saltan" by Rimsky-Korsakov took place. Direction by S. Gaudassinsky. Conductor: A. Anikhanov. Set and costume designer: V. Okunev.

On 8 August 1994 the premiere of L. Mila's (Spain) ballet "White Knight" ("Tirant lo Blanc"), based on the novel by J. Martorell, was held. Direction by Iu. Petukhov. Musical director and conductor: A. Anikhanov. Set and costume designer: A. Kozhenkova. The opera company toured in The Netherlands in March 1994. В начало страницы


Season 76. 1992/93

The opera company toured in Italy in August 1992.

The premiere of the opera "The Barber of Seville" by Rossini took place on 25 September 1992. Direction by A. Bashlovkin, Conductor: Iu. Nikonenko. Set and costume designer: I. Dmitrakova. The ballet company realized three months' tour in Japan.

In January-February 1993 the opera company toured in France (Paris, Nantes). The premiere of the opera "Peter I" by A. Petrov was held on 27 May 1993. Direction by S. Gaudassinskv. Conductor: A. Anikhanov. Set and costume designer: V. Okunev. The production was awarded St. Petersburg Mayor's first prize. The inscribed medals and diplomas were presented.


Season 75. 1991/92

S.Gaudassinsky was appointed Artistic Director of Mussorgsky Theatre.

In november 1991 the opera company toured in Japan. In March 1992 the opera company toured in Greece and in April performed in USA at "New York City Opera".

14 June 1992 the premiere of the ballet "Petersburg" by S. Banevitch (based on A. Bely's novel) took place. Direction by N. Boyarchikov. Conductor: A. Anikhanov. Set and costume designer: R. Ivanov. In 1992 A. Anikhanov became the theatre's Chief conductor. В начало страницы


Season 74. 1990/91

On 25 October 1990 the premiere of the ballet "There Is a Time for Everything", set to music by Norman Dello Hovo, was performed. Choreography by Jose Limon. Direction by Limon's associate, partner Betty Johns and Fritz Ludin. The premiere of the opera "Le Fou" by M Landowsky (France) took place on 27 November 1990. Artistic direction by S. Gaudassinsky. Conductor: V. Ziva.

Season 73. 1989/90

The ballet company participated in big Europe tour: West Berlin, West Germany, Luxemburg, France, Austria, The Netherlands. In October 1989 the Maly Opera Theatre was renamed by order of Russia's Council of Ministers as Mussorgsky Opera and Ballet Theatre. The opera company toured in Paris at the "Champs Elysees" theatre (January 1990). On 29 June 1990 the premiere of the opera "The Brothers Karamazov" by A. Kholminov took place. Direction by S. On 29 April 1988 the premiere of the opera "The Naked King" by T. Khrennikov was performed. Direction by S. Gaudassinsky. Conductor: V. Kozhin.

Season 70. 1986/87

Season 69. 1985/86

The opera company's tour in Italy took place. The premiere of the opera "Eugene Onegin" by Tchaikovsky was held on 2 November 1985. Direction by S. Gaudassinsky. Conductor: V. Kozhin. Set and costume designer: S. Pastukh. Choreography by N. Dolgushin. The opera company showed "Maria Stuart" by S. Slonimsky “Eugene Onegin”, "The Queen of Spades" by Tchaikovsky at Edinburg 40th Festival from 22-25 August 1986. It was the first Russian company that took part in Edinburg Festival. 


Season 68. 1984/85

The premiere of the opera "Iolanta" by Tchaikovsky took place on 21 December 1984. Direction by A. Bashlovkin. Conductor: P. Bubelnikov. Set and costume designer: S. Pastukh. On 24 March 1985 the premiere of the opera "Dorotea" by T. Khrennikov was held. Direction by S. Gaudassinsky. Musical direction: V. Kozhin. Set and costume designer: A. Orlov. 


Season 67. 1983/84

The opera company toured in Italy (Palermo) in March-April 1984.

Season 66. 1982/83

6 June 1983 the theatre celebrated the ballet company's fiftieth anniversary. On 22 June 1983 the premiere of the opera "The Taming of the Shrew" by V. Shebalin was held. Direction by S. Gaudassinsky. Conductor: V. Kozhin. Set and costume designer: S. Pastukh. Ballet master: L. Lebedev.


Season 65. 1981/82

The premiere of the ballet "Esmeralda" by Puni took place on 28 December 1981. The redaction of J. Perro — M. Petipa was partly used. Artistic direction by N. Boyarchikov. Consultants: T. Vecheslova, P. Gussev. Set and costume designer: T. Bruni. On 23 May 1982 the premiere of the opera "The Queen of Spades" by Tchaikovsky was held. The direction was realized by S. Gaudassinsky. The ballet company toured in Japan.

The premiere of the ballet "Heracles" by N. Martynov was held on 2 January 1981. Choreography and direction by N. Boyarchikov. Conductor: V. Kozhin. Set and costume designer: A. Kozhenkova. 24 April 1981 the premiere of the opera "Maria Stuart" by S. Slonimsky was held. It was S. Gaudassinsky's first production at the Maly Theatre. Musical direction by V. Kozhin. The premiere of the opera "Medium" by D. Menotti was held on 11 October 1979. Direction by A. Petrov. Conductor: P. Bubelnikov. Designers: V. Okunev, I. Press. On 30 April 1980 the premiere of the ballet "Swan Lake" by Tchaikovsky took place. Choreography by L. Ivanov and M. Petipa. Artistic direction by N. Boyarchikov. Conductor: P. Bubelnikov. Set and costume designer: E. Geidenrekht.


Season 62. 1978/79

The premiere of the ballet 'The Servant for Two Masters" by M. Tchulaki was held on 23 November 1978. Director exposition by B. Fenster. Direction and choreography by N. Boyarchikov. Conductor: M. Kukushkin. Designers: T. Bruni, E. Leshchinsky. The opera "The Snow Maiden" by Rimsky-Korsakov was renewed with K. Korovin's designs. Direction by T. Smirnova. Conductor: V. Kozhin.

Season 61. 1977/78

N. Boyarchikov became Chief ballet master of Maly Opera Theatre.

The premiere of the ballet "Tsar Boris" by S. Prokofiev took place on 26 March 1978. Composition and musical redaction by N. Martynov. Libretto and choreography by N. Boyarchikov. Conductor: V. Kozhin. Set and costume designer: A. Kozhenkova.


Season 60. 1976/77

The premiere of one-act ballet "Bravo, Figaro!" set to Rossini's music arranged by Kogan was held on 17 October 1976. Ballet master: G. Zamuel. Set designer: G. Sotnikov. Costume designer: T. Ratner. The opera "Don Giovanni" by Mozart was premiered on 8 March 1977. Director: E. Pasynkov. Conductor: A. Dmitriev. Set and costume designer: I. Kustova. The ballet "Cinderella" by S. Prokofiev was produced by O. Vinogradov and premiered on 6 May 1977. Conductor: P. Bubelnikov. Set designer: M. Nauman. Costume designer: T. Ratner. 


Season 59. 1975/76

The Swedish ballerina Elsa Marianna von Rosen produced on the Maly's stage the ballet "La Sylphide" by Loewenshoeld which was not performed in Russia since 1835. The premiere took place on 29 November 1975. O. Vinogradov realized direction of the ballet "Romeo and Juliet" by S. Prokofiev. The premiere was held on 21 April 1976. Conductor: P. Bubelnikov. Designer: 0. Vinogradov.

Season 58. 1974/75

To celebrate thirtieth anniversary of Soviet People's victory in the Great Patriotic War the production of the opera "Madonna and Soldier" by M. Weinberg was realized together with the Polish colleagues: director D. Badushkova and designer Z. Verkhovitch. Conductor: A. Dmitriev. 


Season 57. 1973/74

On 6 October 1973 the premiere of the opera "Not Only the Love" by R. Shchedrin was performed. Director: E. Pasynkov. Conductor: A. Dmitriev. Set and costume designer: M. Shcheglov. The ballet "Coppelia" by Delibs was premiered on 15 December 1973. Direction by O. Vinogradov. Conductor: V. Chernushenko. Set and costume designer: M. Sokolova. The premiere of the ballet "Yaroslavna" by B. Tishchenko was held on 30 June 1974. Direction by Iu. Liubimov. Musical director: A. Dmitriev. Ballet master, choreographer, designer: O. Season 56. 1972/73

B. Eifman produced the ballet "Gayaneh" by A. Khatchaturian. Premiered on 9 December 1972. Musical direction by A. Dmitriev. Set and costume designer: Z. Arshakuni. 


Season 55. 1971/72

In November 1971 the ballet company toured in North Africa. The tour in Lebanon and Turkey was realized by the ballet company in December 1971. The premiere of three-act musical drama took place on 2 September 1972. Consisted of the opera "Ifigenia in Aulide" by Gluck, the ballet "Clitemnestra" set to music by Gluck (choreography by N. Dolgushin) and the opera "Ifigenia in Tauride" by Gluck. Direction by E. Pasynkov. Conductor: A. Dmitriev. Set and costume designer: V. Dorrer. On 29 May 1971 the recital of the ballet dancers V. Mukhanova and N. Dolgushin was held. Choreographic composition set to music by B. Arkhi-mandritov "In Lautrec's Stile" (choreography by G. Zamuel) and Grand pas of the ballet "Paquita" by were presented under the artistic direction of I. Belsky.

The premiere of the opera "Porgy and Bess" by G. Gershwin took place on 27 January 1972. Direction by E. Pasynkov. Conductor: Iu. Temirkanov. Set and costume designer: O. Tselkov.

Season 53. 1969/70

The premiere of the ballet "The Rite of Spring" by Stravinsky was released by the Bolshoy's ballet masters N. Kassatkina and V. Vassilev on 25 December 1969. Conductor: G. Provatorov. Set and costume designer: A. Gontcharov. 


Season 52. 1968/69

On 30 May 1969 the premiere of the opera "Benvenuto Cellini" by H. Berlioz took place. Director: R. Tikhomirov. Conductor: G. Provatorov. Set and costume designer: S. Iunovitch.


Season 51. 1967/68

In November 1967 the ballet company toured in Germany. The ballet master P. Gussev renewed the ballet "Le Corsaire" in honour of M. Petipa's anniversary. Conductor: E. Kornblit. Premiered on 21 March 1968. The ballet "Antony and Cleopatre" by E. Lazarev was produced in I. Chernyshov's composition and choreography. Premiered on 11 July 1968. Conductor: E. Grikurov. Set and costume designer: E. Stenberg. 


Season 50. 1966/67

The ballet company toured in Latin America in August 1966.

Iu. Temirkanov made his debut at the Maly Opera Theatre conducting "La Traviata" by Verdi. The ballet "The Vipers" by Weisburd was produced by Temirkanov and premiered on 18 May 1967. The same year Iu. Temirkanov was appointed musical director of the Maly Theatre. The production of the musical drama "Virineya" by S. Slonimsky was premiered on 30 September 1967. Director: M. Shapiro. Conductor: E. Grikurov. Set and costume designer: S. Mandel.


Season 49. 1965/66

In September 1965 the ballet company toured in Israel.

On 7 May 1966 the premiere of one-act ballet on Shostakovitch's Eleven Symphony was held. Script and choreography by I. Belsky. Conductor: E. Kornblit. Designers: M. Shcheglov, M. Smirnov. В начало страницы


Season 48. 1964/65

The ballet master N. Bovarchikov realized production of the ballet "Three Musketeers" by V. Basner.

Set and costume designer: M. Shcheglov. The opera "Katerina Izmailova" by Shostakovitch returned to the Maly's stage after thirty-year oblivion. Director: E. Pasynkov. Conductor: E. Grikurov. Chorus masters: E. Lebedev, M. Travkin. Set and costume designer: G. Mosseev. Premiered on 17 April 1965. 


Season 47. 1963/64

The performance-soiree composed of the fragments of the theatre's all ballet productions took place on 21 October 1963 in connection with thirtieth anniversary of the ballet company. In 1963 I. Belsky became Artistic Director of the theatre's ballet company. His first production was "The Humpbacked Horse" by R. Shchedrin (premiered on 21 December 1963). Conductor: Iu. Bogdanov. Set and costume designer: M. Gordon. The premiere of the opera "Love for Three Oranges" by Prokofiev took place on 1 May. Director: A. Kireev. Conductor: E. Grikurov Set and costume designer: I. Season 46. 1962/63

The ballets "The Meeting", "Directive Little Bow", "The Girl And Hooligan" by Shostakovitch were produced by the ballet master K. Boyarsky. Conductor: E. Kornblit. Set and costume designer: V. Dorrer. The premiere took place on 29 December 1962. The ballet company toured in United Arab Republic in February - March 1963.


Season 45. 1961/62

On 2 June 1962 the conductor of Sofia Opera House A. Naidenov (Bulgaria) conducted the opera "Otello" by Verdi. Director: E.Sokovnin. Within a year Naidenov was a musical director of the Maly Opera Theatre. 


Season 44. 1960/61

K. Boyarsky restored the ballet "Petrushka" by Stravinsky in Fokin's choreography and Benua's set and costume sketches. The premiere was held on 12 May 1961.

In July - August 1961 the ballet company toured in Australia and New Zealand. This season E. Grikurov was appointed Theatre's chief conductor again.


Season 43. 1959/60

The productions of the ballets "Dafnis and Cloe", "Waltz", "Bolero" by Ravel were realized by the ballet master G. Davitashvili. Conductor: S. Prokhorov. Set and costume designer: E. Stenberg. Premiere took place on 24 March 1960. В начало страницы


Season 42.1958/59

The last months of 1958 K. Zanderling, who worked then in Moscow, became a musical consultant of Maly Opera Theatre. K. Zanderling conducted the opera "Fidelio" by Beethoven on the day of its premiere (29 December). Director: S. Lapirov. Set designer: E. Leshchinsky. Costume designer: V. Kuper.


Season 41. 1957/58

The ballet company toured in Finland in September 1957.

The opera "Esmeralda" by Dargomyzhsky was directed by the ballet master Iu. Grigorovitch and designed by V. Dorrer (the premiere was held on 28 May 1958). Conductor: Iu. Bogdanov.

The ballet "Swan Lake" by Tchaikovsky in version of 1895 (M. Petipa's, L. Ivanov's choreography) was renewed under the artistic direction of F. Lopukhov.

Ballet master K. Boyarsky. Conductors: G. Doniyakh, O. Berg. Designers: I. Andreev, M. Bogatov, G. Levota. Renewal design by N. Melnikov.


Season 40. 1956/57

K. Zanderling was musical director and conductor of the opera "The Flying Dutchman" by Wagner. Premiered on 15 June 1957. Director: S. Lapirov. Set designers: A. Konstantinovsky, E. Leshchinsky. Costume designer: V. Kuper.


Season 39. 1955/56

Season 33.1949/50

On 9 December 1949 the premiere of the ballet "The Youth" by M. Tchulaki took place. Choreographer: B. Fenster. Set and costume designer: T. Bruni.

N. Okhlopkov made the production of the opera 'The Young Guards" by Iu. Meitus. Premiered on 22 April 1950. Conductor: E. Grikurov. Set and costume designer: B. Ryndin. The performance was awarded the State Prize (1950).

The design of children's opera "Kashchei the Deathless" by Rimsky-Korsakov was made by Palekh artists headed by N. Parilov. Premiered on 17 Junel950. Conductor: E. Grikurov. Director: P. Soloviev.


Season 32.1948/49

On 8 November 1948 the premiere of children's ballet "Doctor Aibolit" took place. Designers: N. Akimov, T. Bruni. The ballet "The Tale of Dead Princess and Seven Warriors" (based on Pushkin's poem) by A. Liadov and V. Deshevov had the original design made by Palekh artists headed by N. Parilov. The premiere took place on 16 June. Conducted by E. Cornblit. Direction by A. Andreev and B. Fenster.


Season 31.1947/48

Season 30. 1946/47

The ballet "Marvelous Veil" by Z. Zaranek was produced.

Conductor: P. Feldt. Choreographer: N. Anissimova. Set and costume designer: G. Mosseev. A. Kireev began to direct the performances at Maly Opera Theatre. He staged the opera "The Snow Maiden" by Rimsky-Korsakov. Premiered on 22 March 1947. The scenery was made on K. Korovin's sketches. Conductor: E. Grikurov.


Season 29.1945/46

Two-part production of the opera "War and Peace" by S. Prokofiev was realized. The first part took place on 12 June 1946. (The dress rehearsal of the second part was held but the premiere fixed for 20 July 1947 took no place). The performance was awarded the State Prize (1946). The first post-war ballet production, "Imaginary Fiance" by M Tchulaki, was a debut of B. Fenster as ballet master. The premiere was held on 22 March 1946. Conductor: E. Cornblit. Set and costume designer: T. Bruni. The performance was awarded the State Prize.


Season 28.1944/45

On 8 September 1944 the company came back from evacuation. The season was open on 3 November with the performance "The Tsar's Bride" by Rimsky-Korsakov.В начало страницы

Season 25. 1941/42

From the first days of the war the company took active part in a work of the actor teams, which performed at the front.

On 22 August 1941 the theatre was evacuated to Chkalov (Orenburg) and began to show its performances in September. Under hard conditions of war time new productions were made with the participation of conductor E. Grikurov, choreographer F. Lopukhov, designer V. Kuper.


Season 24. 1940/41

E. Grikurov conducted the opera "Falstaff" by Verdi on 30 March 1941. This season Grikurov became a chief conductor of the Maly Opera Theatre for three decades.


Season 23. 1939/40

K. Kondrashin, who worked at the Maly Opera Theatre from 1937 till 1942, conducted the satirical opera "The Pompadours" by A. Pashchenko (based on Saltykov-Shchedrin's story). Premiered on 20 October 1939. Director: Z. Zakussova.

Set and costume designer: M. Cheremnykh. Ballet master: B. Fenster.

The ballet "The Tale of the Priest and His Farm-hand the Dolt" by M. Tchulaki was produced under the artistic direction of the ballet master V. Varkovitsky Premiered on 9 February 1940. Conductor: P. Feldt.

Season 22. 1938/39

The theatre celebrated its twentieth anniversary with the premiere of the opera "Mother" by V. Zhelobinsky (based on Gorky's novel) on 4 January 1939. It was the theatre's 80th premiere. Conductor: B. Khaikin. Director: S. Birman. Set and costume designer: M. Varnekh.

The Maly Opera Theatre was awarded the Orden of Lenin.


Season 21. 1937/38

The production of the ballet "The Caucasian Prisoner" by B. Assafiev, based on Pushkin's poem, was realized to make a contribution to a founding of contemporary ballet. Director: P. Feldt.

Ballet master assistant: B. Fenster. Designer: B. Khodassevitch. Premiered on 14 April 1938. The opera "Colas Brunion" by D. Kobalevsky was directed by I. Shiepianov. Conductor: B. Khaikin. Designers: Iu. Pimenov, A. Zeiensky. Premiered on 22 February 1938.


Season 20.1936/37

B. Khaikin conducted the opera "The Tsar's Bride" by Rimsky-Korsakov on 2 December (the scenery was made by B. Kustodiev's designs).

This season B. Khaikin was appointed Artistic Director of the Maly Opera Theatre.

Season 19. 1935/36

The premiere of the opera "Placid Don" by I. Dserzhinsky took place on 22 October 1935. Conductor: S. Samosud. Director: M. Tereshkovitch. Set and costume designer: G. Rudi. L. Lavrovsky's first production on this stage was the ballet "Fadetta" by Delibs. Premiered on 9 June 1936. Conductor: P. Feldt.

Set and costume designer: B. Erbschtein.


Season 18. 1934/35

V. Meyerkhold realized his production of the opera "The Queen of Spades" by Tchaikovsky V. Meyerkhold together with the poet V. Stenitch realized the changes in script, libretto and made some cuts that the opera should be closer to the original literary source. The performance went down in musical theatre history by originality of scenic reading. Conductor: S. Samosud. Set and costume designer: L. Tchupiatov. Premiered on 25 January 1935.

On 4 April 1935 the premiere of the ballet "Clear Rill" by Shostakovich was held. Conductor: P. Feldt.

Director and librettist: F. Lopukhov. Set and costume designer: M. Bobyshov.


Season 17. 1933/34

On 22 January 1934 the world premiere of the opera "Lady Macbeth of Mzensk" by D. Shostakovitch took place. Director: N. Smolitch. Conductor: S. Samosud. Set and costume designer: V. Dmitriev.


Season 16. 1932/33

It was the first season for the theatre's ballet company which only took part in opera performances before. On 6 June 1933 the premiere of the ballet "Harlequinade" by Drigo was held. The premiere of the opera "Die Meistersinger" was the company's first appeal to music of Wagner (4 May 1932). Conductor: S. Samosud. Director: E. Kaplan. Designers: T. Glebova, V. Dmitriev. Choreographer: K. Goleizovsky.


Season 14. 1930/31

On 14 April 1931 S. Preobrazhenskaya sung the part of Liubasha in "The Tsar's Bride" by Rimsky-Korsakov. Conductor: S. Samosud.


Season 13. 1929/30

World premiere of the opera 'The Nose" by young Leningrad composer D. Shostakovich took place on 18 January 1930 and caused an acute discussion owing to the opera's innovatory character. Director: N. Smolitch. Conductor: S. Samosud. Set and costume designer: V. Dmitriev.


Season 12. 1928/29

The performance "Colomb", a comic opera by Dressel, was produced to celebrate twentieth anniversary of N. Smolitch's creative activities. Director: N. Smolitch. Conducted by S. Samosud. Set and costume designer: P. Sokolov. Ballet master: V. Vainonen. Premiered on 14 March 1929. On May 25 N. Pechkovsky sung the part of Cavaradossi in "Toska" by Puccini. Conductor: D. Season 11. 1927/28

V. Mayakovsky participated in a work on the per­formance "Twenty-fifth" (after his poem) in honour of tenth anniversary of the October revolution.

Music by S. Schtrassenburg. Director: N. Smolitch. Conducted by S. Samosud. Set and costume designer: M. Levin. The premiere took place on 6 November 1927.


Season 10.1926/27

The first work of set designer V. Dmitriev in Maly Theatre was "The Jump Through the Shadow" by Kshenek. Director: N. Smolitch. Conductor: S. Samosud. Ballet master: A. Chekrygin. The premiere took place on 21 May 1927.


Season 9.1925/26

On December 1925 the premiere of the operetta "Yellow Blouse" by Legar took place. Conductor: S. Samosud. Director: N. Smolitch. Set and costume designer: M. Bobyshov. Choreographer: A. Chekrygin. The production was a success and it was performed 462 times.

Season 8. 1924/25

A first attempt to produce the performance concerning contemporaneity. On 24 April 1925 the premiere of the drama chronicle "For the Red Petrograd" took place. Music by A. Gladkovsky, the student of Conservatory, together with the composer E. Prussak. Director: N. Petrov. Conductor: S. Samosud. Set and costume designer: A. Arapov.


Season 7. 1923/24

On 22 September 1923 the premiere of the opera "The Golden Cockerel" ("Le Coq d'Or") by Rimsky-Korsakov was performed. Conductor: S. Samosud. Director: N. Smolitch. Set and costume designer: M. Bobyshov. G. Balanchivadse's choreography for the dances.


Season 6. 1922/23

The theatre was renamed as The State Academic Maly Opera Theatre.


Season 5. 1921/22

S. Samosud became the theatre's Artistic Director.


Season 4. 1920/21

Season 3. 1919/20

In April 1920 the theatre was named The State Academic Comic Opera Theatre. On 25 April 1920 S. Samosud for the first time conducted the opera "Romeo and Juliet" by Gounod. Director: S. Dorozhinsky Set and costume designer: B. Almedingen.


Season 2. 1918/19

The operetta "Song-birds" by Offenbach was the first theatre's original performance and its premiere took place on 13 October 1918. The theatre had already its own orchestra, chorus and extras. Director: M. Tsimmerman. Conductor: V. Dranishnikov. Set and costume designer: M. Zandin. 


Season 1. 6 March - 31 May 1918

On the initiative of People's Commissar A. Lunatcharsky the second opera house of the city was open with "The Barber of Seville" by Rossini in the edifice of the former Imperial Mikhailovsky theatre. The performance was entirely transferred from the Mariinsky theatre's stage with K. Korovin's scenery. Director: I. Tartakov. Conductor: D. Pokhitonov.
