The Small Passage Room

These rooms were used for auxiliary purposes. The name of the first of them was due to the tradition of placing there regimental standards of the Guards during their regular summer quartering at Peterhof. For some period the walls in the Standard Room were lined with a yellow fabric which matched the colour of the Imperial standard. The folding card-table with marquetry decoration, produced by the master-craftsman Nikifor Vasilyev in the 1770s, is a notable piece of the furniture.

The second room, the Room for Cavaliers-in-Attendance, was intended for the horseguardsmen who guarded the private apartments of the Empress. Like all the rooms in the northern state suite, this interior, decorated to the design of Rastrelli, was richly adorned with gilded carving on the panels. The walls of the room are lined with crimson damask woven in imitation of a surviving pre-war sample.

The Small Passage Room delights its visitors by the beautiful design and rich colours of the silk on its walls. It is the authentic mid-19th-century fabric woven specially for Peterhof at the G. Sapozhnikov Factory in Moscow. Of particular interest among the paintings in this room is Scipione Pulzone's Portrait of Vittoria Accoramboni, a 16th-Century Italian Poet whose life is described in Stendhal's Chronicles. The room has also items of mahogany furniture made by English, German and Russian craftsmen in the eighteenth century. The paintings by noted European artists adorn the walls of the Small Passage Room.
