In a very short time, Gianandrea Noseda has established himself at the top level of international conducting. From September 2002 he is the new Principal Conductor of the BBC Philharmonic in Manchester.
In 1997, at the invitation of Valery Gergiev, Gianandrea Noseda became the first foreign Principal Guest Conductor at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg. Here he also helped set up the Mariinsky Young Philharmonic Orchestra and serves as its Principal Conductor. In 1998 he was appointed Principal Conductor of the Orquesta de Cadaqués - a Spanish ensemble which unites the best musicians from the major symphony orchestras of Europe. Since 1999 he has been Principal Guest Conductor of the Rotterdam Philarmonic Orchestra and in April 2000 he was named Artistic Director of the International Festival Settimane musicali di Stresa e del Lago Maggiore.
Gianandrea Noseda was born in Milan where he began his musical studies in piano, composition and conducting. He later studied conducting in Vienna and in Italy with Donato Renzetti, Myung-Whun Chung and Valery Gergiev. In 1994 he won the international competitions in Douai (chaired by Georges Prêtre) and Cadaqués (chaired by Gennadi Rozhdestvensky).
Since making his professional conducting debut in 1994 with the Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano Giuseppe Verdi, Gianandrea Noseda has appeared with orchestras such as the BBC Symphony, the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Goetheborg Symphony Orchestra, the Oslo Philarmonic, the S.Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra ,the Vienna Chamber Orchestra, the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra, the Toronto Symphony, the Orchestre du Capitole de Toulouse, the Ensemble Orchestral de Paris and the Orchestre National de France. In Italy, he appears regularly with the Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionale della Rai, the Orchestra of the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino and the Orchestra of the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia.
The launch of his professional conducting career coincideed with the start of his collaboration with the Mariinsky Theatre. He has conducted the Kirov Opera - both on tour and in St Petersburg - in new productions of Rigoletto and Tosca (1997); Le nozze di Figaro, La Traviata and La Sonnambula (1998);Don Carlo and Don Giovanni (1999) Lucia di Lammermoor and Les Contes d´Hoffmann (2000); La Bohème (2001) and Cosi fan tutte (2002). In the 2002/3 Season, he conducts Il Trittico in St Petersburg. With the Kirov Ballet, he has conducted productions of Sleeping Beauty and Balanchine´s Jewels (1999).
In 1998 Gianandrea Noseda made his debut at the San Francisco Opera House in the Prokofiev´s Bethrotal in the monastery .In 2002 he made his Metropolitan Opera debut, conducting Prokofiev´s War and Peace (a co-production with the Mariinsky Theatre) which he also conducted in 2000 for his Covent Garden debut in London and at the Teatro alla Scala, Milan. In 2001 he made his debut at the Los Angeles Opera in The Queen of Spades, with Placido Domingo in the lead role.
In the season 2003-2004 he will make his debut with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Opera Nationale de Lyon.
Gianandrea Noseda´s discography includes recordings with the Wiener Philarmoniker and Anna Netrebko on the Deutsche Grammophon label, with the Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano Giuseppe Verdi on the CLAVES label. For Philips, he recorded Aria featuring tenor Andrea Bocelli and the Orchestra del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino. As Principal Conductor of the BBC Philarmonic, he records on the Chandos label and his first two recordings will be devoted to the music of Respighi and Prokofiev.
