Opening of the memorial plaque and
the bust of Emperor Alexander II
The study was constructed to the design of Giacomo Quarenghi for Alexander
Pavlovich, the future Emperor Alexander I, in 1791. When restoring the
room after the fire of the Winter Palace Alexander Bryullov revived original
decoration. The sculptor took this decision as some of the rooms of the
suite of rooms facing the Admiralty were considered memorial because here
lived Alexander I, Nicholas I and Alexander II when they were still the
heirs on the throne. Emperor Alexander II used a small folding bed when
he slept in his study. The memorial bust is placed now where in 1830-s
this bed used to stay. Later the bed was moved to the alcove. It was here,
to this room, where Alexander II, badly wounded by a terrorist bomb, was
brought on March 1, 1881. The bed was taken from the alcove and turned
to the window. The Emperor was laid on the bed facing the window, but
without regaining consciousness he died at 3. 35 p.m.
