The Treasures of Holy Echmiadzin. 1700 years
of Christianity in Armenia
The exhibition devoted to 1700 anniversary of adoption of Christianity
as the state religion in Armenia features 70 monuments from the collections
of the First Capital Town of Echmiadzin, the residence of the Supreme
Patriarch Catholicos of all Armenians. These collections are at present
housed in the four museums located on the territory of the Holy See: in
the museum of the Cathedral, in the treasury museum of Alek and Mary Manukyan,
in the Old and New Patriarch Residences, and in the Golden storeroom.
The collection was compiled over a long period of time from the works
of art donated or presented to the Echmiadzin Holy See, brought from all
over the world from Armenian colonies and churches. The treasures rescued
from the churches of the settlements destroyed by the enemy invasion and
the genocide of Armenians (from Mush, Varagavank, Van, Lim). Significant
place in the collection is occupied by the gifts and acquisitions of Catholicoses
of all Armenians. The collections of Holy Echmiadzin include also works
of almost all kinds of Armenian art of the 9th - 20th centuries.
