Under Italian Sky… Sculptures produced
in Italy by European masters
8 June 1999 - 1 April, 2000
From 8 June 1999 the Alexander Hall of the Winter Palace will house 40
works by European sculptors of the early 17th to late 19th century. The
exhibition consists of marble, bronze and terracotta statues, busts, reliefs
and sculptural groups. Fifteen items were created by Italian masters.
The other works were executed by German, Danish, English, Russian and
Flemish artists. All these items are put together due to the fact that
they have the same birthplace - Italy. Besides, the majority of the works
are held in the Museum's reserves, thus the public can enjoy a number
of fine sculptures rarely exhibited. The most important works in the exhibition
are Portrait of a Man (marble) and figure of St Ambrogio (terracotta)
produced by the celebrated Italian sculptor Lorenzo Bernini (1598-1680),
Cupid by a notable master of Italian and European Classicism Antonio Canova
(1757-1822), marble reliefs and statue Ganymede by Canova's Danish follower
Bertel Thorvaldsen (1770-1844), tree works by the foremost French artist
of the second half of the 19th century Prospere d'Pinay (1836-1912), and
a version of the famous figure Adolescence of Colombo by Giulio Monteverde
(1837-1917); this figure was honoured with the prize at the exhibition
in Parma in 1870.
This collection is a small portion of sculptural works from the overall
Hermitage collection.
Numerous works by artists mentioned above and their contemporaries such
as Emil Wolff (1802-1879) and John Gibson (1790-1866) are on display in
the Hermitage exhibition rooms.
