The Great Faberge
October 1997 - 26 October 1999
Since October 1997, the Great Faberge exhibition has been on show for
the public at the Hermitage in the Blue Bedchamber of the Winter Palace,
and has proved very popular with museum visitors. As promised, this exhibition
includes a rotating selection of works from private and public collections,
and since October 1998 a number of new items has been on display.
Over 150 items represent the work of the celebrated firm of Faberge,
enabling us to appreciate the variety of techniques, materials and styles
employed by the firm's remarkable craftsmen. Jewellery, Easter eggs, snuff-boxes,
cigarette cases, photograph frames, table bells, handles for walking-sticks
and umbrellas, desk-sets and clocks, all created with virtuoso skill,
come together to embody Faberge's central aim-that domestic objects should
become works of art. Exquisite transparent enamels were the particular
pride of the firm, but no less striking are the hard-stone figurines,
flowers and berries.
The display includes both personal objects, which once belonged to members
of the Imperial household, and official gifts to the Emperor and Empress.
This display will remain on show until October 26, 1999.
