Badge of the Order of Alexander
Nevsky
Late 18th-early 19th centuries
Ormolu, enamel, glass
H 7.4 cm, w 6.8 cm
The Order of Alexander Nevsky was instituted
in 1725 at the request of Peter I. It had no
degrees; diamonds decorating the badge were
an indication of the bearer's advancement
within the order. Until 1816 the badges were
made of ‘ruby' glass. The order's Cross was
worn on a red moire sash across the left
shoulder, and the eight-pointed Star with the
motto [trans.] For Labour and the Motherland,
was worn on the left breast. Badges of the late
18th-early 19th centuries are extremely rare. |
