Throne of Paul I
1798-1800
Wood, gilt, velvet
This throne of Emperor Paul I, who became Grand Master of the Order of Malta in 1790, was made by Telesforo Bonaveri from a design by Giacomo Quarenghi, a celebrated Russian architect. Along with matching standard lamps, stools, and an piscopal armchair, the throne formed part of the decoration of the Malta Chapel, which was constructed and built by Quarenghi in 1798-1800 near the Vorontsov Palace on what is now Sadovaya Ulitsa, and given to the Knights of Malta by Paul I.
