Panorama of the Mikhailovsky Castle. View from the Connetable Square
Lory Gabriel I Ludwig and Lory Gabriel II Matthias
After a print by Benjamin Paterssen
Outline engraving, watercolour
51.4 x 78 cm
This sheet is one of a series of Panoramas of St. Petersburg; the composition was both etched and engraved, and coloured with watercolour. The entire series was created between 1803 and 1805 and published in Switzerland by consent of the tsar, Paul I. The print shows the Mikhailovsky Castle (architects Vasily Bazhenov and Vincenzo Brenna), Paul's residence. The monument to Peter I, erected in 1800, is shown beside the building; the imperial carriage drawn by six horses can be seen crossing the square.
