Chess Casket
Andrian Sukhanov
1782
Steel and bronze, heat-treated and faceted, inlaid with water patterned gold
17 x 50 x 31 cm
The casket was presented to Catherine II. The lid bears the depiction of an armoury of Tula, planned but unbuilt. On the side panels are Glory and Athena. The casket contained 80 chessmen, or five half-sets, which corresponded to the way the Russians then played chess: four players participated in the game simultaneously. The decor of the casket consists of typical Neoclassical elements-laurel wreaths and acanthus leaves made from gilded bronze.
