Buddha-Amitabha Meeting the Soul of
a Righteous Man on its Way to the
Pure Land
Khara-Khoto
12th century
Cotton, mineral paint
142.5 x 94 cm
The Buddha-Amitabha – ruler of the Pure Land
of the West – is shown with two Bodhisattvas,
carrying a lotus throne on which he will install
the soul of a dead righteous man, who can thus
be happily reincarnated. The deceased here is
represented as a naked boy, standing before
them on a cloud, and the figure of a seated dead
monk is depicted beneath a tree in the lower left
corner. The thangka is well-preserved and is
notable for its striking bright colouring.
