This landscape would not seem to have been taken from the life, for the tower also appears in another drawing of a different scene by Rembrandt. Here a richly-dressed horseman, accompanied by his servant, rides across the landscape, with a gallows and a hanged man standing on a hill in the background and a group of trees in the centre. The figure and costume of the horseman remind us of Jan Six, of whom the artist made an etched portrait and three drawings in 1647.
