Panel with the Standard

Karl von Egeri (?)

This stained glass was executed after a
drawing by the German painter Hans
Holbein the Younger, The Standard Bearer
from Livental, dating from 1519-1520. It is
well known that the painter made many
designs for decorative items, particularly
stained glass, but only few works after his
design have actually survived. This lends a
particular interest to the Hermitage
example. The composition and superb
decorative qualities of this work allow us to
attribute it to Karl von Egeri.
