Balls and a Hammer-Axe Head
North Caucasus, Maikop Burial Mound
3rd millenium BC
Stone
Diam of balls 2.7-3 cm, l of axe 15.6 cm
These stone balls are of regular geometric shape. They have a smooth surface, polished through use to a metallic shine. They were intended as projectiles for use with slings, but they are also thought to have been used as jewellery. The stone axe has elongated proportions with a slightly bulging blade, but there are no signs of artificial or natural deformation and no signs of wear.
